Mithila Museum
Collections
in Progress
Not an empty shell waiting to be filled — a museum whose collection philosophy is already being thoughtfully shaped.
Collection Philosophy
Developing and
Intentional
At this stage, collections are understood in a developing and intentional sense. The initiative is exploring how a future collection can reflect the breadth, depth, and evolution of Mithila painting while remaining focused, rigorous, and artist-centered.
The goal is not only to gather works, but to build a collection that helps tell a fuller story of the tradition — its history, symbolism, styles, lineages, themes, and contemporary transformations.
Works That
Illuminate
A future collection may include works that illuminate the full range and evolution of the tradition.
- ◆ Historical and contemporary approaches to Mithila painting
- ◆ Regional and stylistic variation
- ◆ Ceremonial and symbolic imagery
- ◆ Generational shifts in subject matter and composition
- ◆ Works by recognized artists and emerging voices
- ◆ Paintings that reflect both continuity and change within the tradition
Thinking Beyond
Objects Alone
Collections in progress may eventually extend beyond physical works to include knowledge and context.
- ◆ Artist narratives
- ◆ Oral histories
- ◆ Archival materials
- ◆ Visual documentation
- ◆ Interpretive research
- ◆ Thematic references that help audiences understand the cultural worlds in which the paintings exist
A Larger Belief
Preserving Works
and Knowledge Systems
A museum collection should not only preserve works of art, but also preserve the knowledge systems that allow those works to be meaningfully understood.
As the initiative develops, the collection strategy will continue to prioritize artistic integrity, cultural context, and long-term educational value.
Artistic Integrity
Works selected with care for their quality, authenticity, and significance.
Cultural Context
Every work understood in relation to the tradition it carries forward.
Educational Value
Collections that can support exhibitions, scholarship, and future generations of learning.
The museum aims to build a collection that is not simply representative, but deeply purposeful — one that can support exhibitions, scholarship, public interpretation, and future generations of learning.
